You may not initially think of department stores when you're looking for a prom dress, but some of the national chains have interesting formal dresses. Macy's has a prom shop featuring many types of long prom dresses and short prom dresses, from brands that may be unfamiliar: Trixxi, XOXO, Ruby Rox, Speechless, Adriana Papell, B Darlin and list goes on and on. The online store has several different price ranges. At the time of our visit, there were quite a few dresses priced below $100. and there was even a category for "Under $50." Styles include one-shoulder, strapless, sleeveless, halter, minis, gowns and more. Many local formal dress specialty shops register dresses for specific schools, so that an individual's dress will be unique. If you're buying from a department store, you may want ask if they perform a registry service.

Matilda Jane Recalls Girl's Chelsa Dress

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Indiana-based Matilda Jane, announces a voluntary recall of the "Chelsa" girl's dress. The item is a sleeveless sundress in sizes 2, 4, and 6. The top is white with green polka dots; the bottom is printed with a green and yellow floral design and has a multi-colored floral border at the hem. A CPSC news release states that a possible hazard involves buttons that can come off, "...posing a choking hazard." The dresses were manufactured in China and were sold at in-home trunk shows and online from February 1 through February 25, 2011. Consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. The recall involves about 1,500 units.

Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest

We salute Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com for their very creative toilet paper wedding dress contest. The competition is open to anyone in the world who is 18 years of age or older, and "...is not an employee of Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com, any sponsor, nor members of their immediate families." The rules also state: "contest dress and headpiece entries must be made of Toilet Paper, Glue,tape and/or may be sewn." The winner receives a $1000. (USD) gift card. There are also prizes for 2nd and 3rd place. the Cheap-Chic-Weddings website contains photos of past entries.

Costco to Sell Wedding Dresses

Costco will offer some designer wedding dresses at discount prices. The popular membership warehouse club chain is working with designer Kirstie Kelly to offer a limited number of dresses, ranging in price from about $700. to $1400.

"Mom Prom" Raises Money for Charity
